Hey, I’m Ken.
Here’s why I’m joining Our York Media.

Have you ever known something is inherently inside of you wanting to break out, but you don’t fully understand what that “something” is – only that it’s viscerally there and produces unrest? That unrest is uncomfortable, but it’s essential to discovering what’s behind it.

Over the past several years, that unrest has pushed me, pulled me, and at times daunted and haunted me. But, when it revealed itself to me, I looked back and saw the path that it was leading me on to bring me to this point.

I am a storyteller.

My name is Ken Bruggeman. I was born and raised in this great county of York, but like many who grew up here, I viewed the rest of the world as more desirable. I discovered over time it was because of that I was looking for all the wrong things. I only saw what I perceived through my lens.

I grew up in a comfortable suburban family. There was an unawareness of the reality of life for so many in York County, particularly in the city. Later, during my time living downtown, I was confronted with what was beyond the three-block radius of central downtown.

We constantly see stories of crime, poverty, abuse, and homelessness, but we don’t often hear the heart of the story. We stop at the mask, the façade, the manifestation of what those conditions drive people to.

When I was asked why I wanted to be the creative director for Our York Media, I had one simple reason. I want to tell the stories of the underdogs, the unsung heroes, and give a voice to the invisible.

I’ve had the opportunity to speak to a number of those people. I’ve spent time listening to them. There’s always one common thing at the heart of their story: “I want to be heard, accepted, and loved.”

How different is that from anyone else? Our position in life determines the comforts and conveniences that we experience; but no matter who we are, we all have the same basic needs.

When I was asked why I wanted to be the creative director for Our York Media, I had one simple reason. I want to tell the stories of the underdogs, the unsung heroes, and give a voice to the invisible.

There is a beautiful story to be told no matter where you are. There are people we pass every day that carry stories of life with them that would rivet every single one of us.

I’m grateful to be a part of the team at Our York Media, who has created a platform for all of you to have access to these stories, and I have been afforded the prodigious opportunity to be able to capture them.

I’m greatly looking forward to the adventures that await…
